Introduction
Most places look good when you’re scrolling. Nice photos, bit of sunshine, a line about how relaxing it is. Then you arrive and it’s not quite what you expected. Not quite the holiday cottage near Scarborough you were expecting.
Not bad, just not right. That usually comes down to a few simple things people don’t think about when booking.

Why they all look similar online
You’re seeing everything at its best. Wide angle photos, clean rooms, carefully worded descriptions.
What you don’t really get a feel for is how it works once you’re there.
Where do you sit in the evening?
Is there space to spread out?
Does it feel easy or slightly awkward?
That’s the bit that matters.
What actually makes a difference
It’s rarely the extras, it’s the basics done properly. Our guests comment on this time and time again. That home from home feeling. This was our home first, and that still comes through in how we run it. A place where we relaxed and enjoyed the area. That travels through to the way we run it and respect it. We’re proud of our holiday cottage and proud to keep it in tip top order.
Sounds simple, but it’s what separates a good stay from one that just feels average.
A place where you can sit comfortably together.
A layout that makes sense without thinking about it.
A kitchen that works without being a faff.
Easy parking so you’re not starting every day frustrated.
A bit of outside space so you’re not stuck indoors.

The small things that end up mattering most
It’s not usually the big stuff that lets a place down, it’s the little things that build up.
Nowhere to properly relax, too close to a busy road, feeling overlooked. We’ve made sure this is covered. There’s space for everyone, without feeling on top of each other. And what you see is what you get. No over promising. The garden is enclosed, the kitchen seats five comfortably, and everyone has a proper bed.
You don’t notice it straight away, but you feel it after a day or two. That’s where most places fall down, over promised and under delivered.
What a good stay actually feels like
You arrive, you drop your bags. That’s it. There shouldn’t be any figuring things out, no adjusting, you just settle in. Kids find the games room, dogs find the garden, and you find the wine glasses.
You end up spending more time there than you thought you would. Mornings feel slower, evenings feel easier.
That’s when you know you’ve got it right.

Why location still plays a part
Being right in the middle of everything sounds ideal. In reality, it’s not always what people enjoy most. A lot of the time, staying just outside works better.
Quieter. Easier. Less hassle.
At The Firs you’re still close enough to get everywhere, but far enough away to actually switch off. It’s right on the edge of Scarborough in Scalby. Ten minutes and you’re on the seafront. Fifteen the other way and you’re on the moors. Walks from the door, coast to countryside.
What makes a stay work for families and dogs
A lot of places say they are family friendly or dog friendly. In reality, that can mean anything.
What tends to make the biggest difference is having space that actually works for everyone.
Somewhere children can relax without being on top of each other. A layout where everyone can sit together in the evening. And a garden where the dog can go out without you having to think about it.
Those small things change the feel of a stay completely. Having that security of an enclosed garden helps you relax. Knowing the dog won’t escape and the kids will be safe…. or the other way round!
It becomes easier, less managed, more like proper time away. That’s when you realise you’ve actually had a proper break.
That is what most people are really looking for, even if they do not realise it when they first start searching.

A quick way to sense check before booking
Before you commit, it’s worth asking yourself a few simple things:
Can I picture actually spending time here?
Does it feel easy or slightly awkward?
Would I look forward to coming back here at the end of the day?
If the answer is yes, you’re probably on the right track.
Conclusion
Most people book based on how a place looks. The better stays come from how a place feels once you’re in it.
Get that right, and everything else tends to fall into place.
